Writing

The written word has long been a helpful way for Elisabeth to share her views with different audiences. It has taken many forms - from journal writing, to articles published in human rights journals, to short stories & prose-poems. She thinks of writing as painting with words and likes to share them both. The below prose-poem was written when Elisabeth was recovering from COVID. She got COVID in March 2020 while living in Queens, NY, USA. It was a scary time as it was the beginning of the lock-down period and people were panicking as to how to feed and care for their families without going outside. Supermarket deliveries were often 'sold out' & toilet paper was nowhere to be found. A time of respite was when people went out on their fire-escapes and hung out their windows at the same time every night to cheer on the medical personnel, teachers, delivery people & others who were on the front lines. The piece starts with a sentence from her internist who was cautioning her about going to the nearest emergency room for treatment as she could camp out and wait in line for over a day with no assurance of being admitted, Elisabeth shared the poem with friends some months later & people found it healing. She shares it with you now, hoping it has a similar effect.
